I call this part of the river, on the northside not the bike path, and west of Stockdale Bridge, the "coyote run" because I've seen so many of them out there. I hadn't seen them in a while, but they're baaaaaack.

I caught a glimpse of two of them pacing us about 50 yards away on an open plain. When I got into a part that's narrow and has a lot of brush and trees I heard them. Maybe 3, yipping and howling. They sounded closer and of course my dopey dogs were all excited, which is what the coyotes want. It was an ambush!
I put Boxcar on the leash (he's not smart enough to be scared and has a highly casual attitude toward obedience, like when I call him!) and figured 2.5 miles out was good enough that day!
Safely back in the truck.

The deets:
5.09 miles
54 minutes (ugh)
Average pace 10:38
Best pace 7:45 (probably when I realized the coyotes were stalking us)
Calories burned 538.
